Drama Mama

Saturday was full of drama in the Mack house. We went to dance class and Bountiful like we usually do and then we took Missy Mack to the One World Theater to see Beauty and the Beast. We had been preparing her because she has been known to have a melt down at costume dressed person before and wasn’t very pleased with Beast at Disney World last year. She seemed fine with it. Dressed in her cute new dress from Honey and Pops and striped tights we sat in our seats and waited for the show to begin. There were all sorts of little girls there. Some were even dressed in their princess costumes and were there for a birthday party, which I thought was a fabulous idea. This place is perfect theater for kids because it is small and it is affordable. That doesn’t mean it was cheap or free, but affordable. Suddenly the little miss starts flapping her arms and screaming I want to go home. I stood on the patio with her and we talked about it. She cried and cried until she worked herself up into a tizzy. This was similar to our experience at Dora and I learned that once Dora came on stage, she was struck and in awe and ended up just fine. After a lot of drama at Dora, she eventually sat in her seat and loved every minute of it. She wanted to go to the bathroom so I took her. While we were in there, I coached her through this. I pumped her up. We took deep breaths. I told her we couldn’t go to the theater anymore if she always acted liked this. Suddenly, she jumped up from the potty and said let’s go. She began marching with force and determination. Once we were at the threshold of the theater she was a little more hesitant. We watched from wings, took a break and then ended up back in our seats. Ten minutes later after she realized that people were entering and exiting the stage, she screamed out again disrupting the whole show. Fabulous. We all exited and did not return. All the way home she listed all the reasons why we couldn’t see Beauty and the Beast, which included:

I need to clip my nails they are long.

Can we go back and only watch the Belle parts?

We were going to bake cookies and she didn’t want to miss that.

She wanted to go potty at home and then we could go back.

She needs a snack.

She just needs a nap (she NEVER naps)

We got home and she went upstairs and cried in her room for 2 hours. Then she came down, said she felt better and that the theater was fun! Here she is after telling us how much fun it was:

3-6scared

We tried to talk her into a nap, we played and then suddenly at 4 PM she fell fast asleep on the couch and did not budge until 7PM. She did say to me, ‘Mommy, I am sorry about today’. Sweet girl. This whole thing was tough. I felt like I was torturing her, but at the same time I wanted to push her through it. Part of me was angry at her and part of me felt for her. I learned my lesson. No more theater. She went to bed at 9 and woke up happy and asking if we could go back to the theater today.

Really? Uh… no!

Some how she has convinced herself that Saturday was fun. It really ruined my day. I was embarrassed and felt like mother of the year. The staff there was so kind and did their best to help her get over it and go and enjoy the show. Never once did her excuse or reasons admit that she is a chicken shit.

Any one else have a Drama Mama?

Not yet, but I know I will! Totally agree with you on trying to get her through the situation and help her to understand it. I’m sure that was tough. I bet she’ll do better the next time you go to the theatre….you know, in like 10 years! haahaha

  3. Momma To The A's

I have done the same thing with A1 … push her through things. Sometimes and I mean sometimes they need it. Poor Missy Mack! It seemed like she wanted to enjoy it, but it just was not happening. Sorry you had to miss it too. Why does this parenthood thing have to be so hard and frustrating at times?

Guess who is biting now?? Yep! Just great!
