International Day

Yesterday was International Day at my school. This is the big spring event there. 120 children in grade K-5 participated in our parade dressed as children from their families country of origin. They stood together on stage and sang and then the people from the One World Theatre came and presented instruments and songs from all around the world with audience participation. We had a dancing dragon and tasting of foods from all around the world. A fun and high energy day was had by all.

Missy Mack’s school participated too. They dressed up from their country of origin and brought foods to have an international pot luck for lunch. They also sent home a plain paper doll for us to dress and create a paper doll version of themselves in their country’s clothes. I did my best not be too much of a control freak. Here is our paper doll:

Here are the pictures of everyone else’s psper dolls on the Bulletin Board:]

Here is Missy Mack in her Scottish outfit. Her Great Grandmother made this dress and her Aunt made the bow both in our family Scottish Tartan. We could not find the cute patent leather shoes she had planned on wearing so tennis shoes is what we end up wearing.

These are pictures of Missy Mack’s class eating at the pot luck and posing for pictures. In the lunch picture, the little girl you can see there is Missy Mack’s love/hate friend in her class. She is the most similar in age and is always telling me the most ridiculous stories about things she says to her. The love each other. They hate each other. Check out the little boy in the last picture. Notice he is kissing the head of the little girl next to him. Sweet stuff!

Then it was time for the big kids to parade.  The parade started with the 5th graders dancing under the long dragon costume and in came the other 120 students dressed in their country of origin holding up a sign for the country they represented. Then the music teacher had taught the whole school a few songs feature international cultures and ended with an interactive performance by the One  World Theatre. The whole school was hyped with excitement all day. The teacher’s participated by bringing food from their country of origin, which each class does as well, to share with the rest of the staff. I made Scottish Soda Bread and I bought European butter (Yum!). This bread was so dense but so yummy. There was a teacher at who lived in German for a bit and her and another German family became great friends. They would take turns hosting dinner. At her house they could only speak English at the table and she taught them how to prepare American foods and at their house they only spoke German and were taught how to make German foods. One of the things she learned from the German family was how to make homemade funnel cakes, so she spent the day making fresh funnel cakes for us. She sent me home with funnel cake batter claiming that it was super easy, but I never got to try because I forgot to take it out of the car and it stayed there over night. Bummer. Mr. Mack’s favorite thing is a funnel cake . Here are some pictures of the school event. I got some great photos of my students dressed up but since that is somewhat illegal, I will do my best to show group shots.

We have had a pretty dramatic Saturday, but I will post more about that later. Enjoy your weekend!

So fun!! Love Missy Mack’s little dress and bow. She looks adorable! What a great idea about hosting dinner and only speaking English or only speaking German. Great way to learn a new language. Looks like a fun-filled day!
